PORTER TOWNSHIP — A 42-year-old Vandalia man was killed in a crash Monday evening in Porter Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to a personal injury crash at approximately 6:02 p.m. Monday at the intersection of U.S. 12 and M-217. The investigation determined that James Hettmansperger, 42, of Vandalia, was driving a Jeep Liberty eastbound on U.S. 12 when he lost control and crossed the centerline. The Jeep first struck the rear end of a GMC Sierra pickup and trailer driven by Brett White, 44, of Elkhart, Ind., who was traveling westbound. Hettmansperger’s Jeep then collided with the front of the trailer before leaving the roadway and coming to rest alongside a utility pole.
Despite life-saving measures by EMS and Fire personnel, Hettmansperger was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Seatbelts were worn on both subjects. Assisting in this crash was SEPSA Ambulance and SEPSA Fire Department.
