MILTON TOWNSHIP — A historical organization aiming to help address the needs of the community gathered Saturday to celebrate progress.
The NAACP Niles-Buchanan Chapter hosted its annual banquet at Milton Township Hall, 32097 Bertrand St., Niles.
Founded in 1909, the organization is an interracial endeavor striving to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.
The NAACP Niles chapter began in March 1942 and had been a voice for human equality by addressing local issues through advocacy and communication, as well as sought to educate members and the public on history and current concerns. The chapter was dissolved in 2018 due to low participation before being revived in 2024.
The banquet featured a formal dinner, awards and recognition and live music and entertainment. The keynote speaker was Yvonne White, NAACP President and National Board Member.
“As we go about our lives and we look at what’s happening in the world, to be able to see an image like this of unity taking place in our community, I think, is outstanding,” said Cam Herth of the Niles-Buchanan Chapter Education Committee.
The theme for the NAACP Banquet 2025 is “One Nation, One Heart: Healing Through Unity.”
“Together, we can overcome challenges, build bridges and create a future that honors the dreams of those that came before us,” said Chapter President Beverly Woodson. “Let us unite and let us move forward stronger than ever. That is who we are, and we are going forward.”
Woodson encouraged community members to join the NAACP chapter.
“We need each other more than ever at this time,” she said. “We don’t just want to have meetings. We have to come together and put your knowledge on the table and let us work it out together. Because without working together, we remain divided.”
