NILES — Those with a sweet tooth have a new option to sate their hunger with the reopening of The Candy Shack in Niles.
Though previous versions of the business existed in other locations, the newest version of the Candy Shack is now open at 931 North 5th Street.
Those driving or walking by in recent weeks may have noticed a sudden increase in activity in the building, followed by the appearance of new signs, displays, and an exuberant greeter waving to passers-by.
Wide offerings of candy, starting at as little as one cent apiece, are center stage, but the new shop also offers a variety of snacks, grocery products, and even sportswear. The shop is designed like a paradise for after school kids, with slushies, nachos, jerky, snack cakes, chips, soft drinks, and more. The shop is also a convenient stop for those who need a quick refill on dish soap, hygiene products, or other household items. A shelf lined with Nikes and other shoes and a rack of clothing completes the display.
“We’re trying to bring it back old school,” said owner Jerome Jenkins, emphasizing the low-priced candy and the neighborhood location for those who don’t drive or just want close access to such products. “It’s a great positive for the community.”
Jerome, who moved to Niles from South Bend, described a fondness for the peaceful, quieter way of life compared to his previous community. He recognizes Niles as a community that takes care of itself and has already received praise from customers and neighbors stopping in the shop.
The Candy Shack is already dreaming bigger, with a plan to add arcade machines to grow the after school draw and ideas for an outdoor gathering space at the back of the building, with basketball hoops and a rear-entry for easier access from the neighborhood street parking.
Jenkins also intends to be active with events for Halloween and Christmas and hopes to participate in wider community events. He plans to add tables and chairs out front for seating.
The Candy Shack is open every day from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
