Dear Editor,

Michigan and Southwest Michigan are in a war for talent. The number one issue in economic and community development is our ability to have an educated and top-notch workforce. The recent ranking by SmartAsset, a financial services firm that ranks community colleges, put Lake Michigan College as the top ranked school in Michigan and the 13th best in the United States. That designation signals to people and businesses that this is a great place to invest, to work, and to visit.

As the former President of LMC, I have seen first-hand how Lake Michigan College is connected to the community. For 79 years, LMC has been making a difference, and changing with the times to reflect the needs of residents of Southwest Michigan. Whether it’s starting up a Police Academy for law enforcement; creating the first county-wide youth apprenticeship program in Michigan to help retain our young people; or having a top 5 nursing program in Michigan to help care for our citizens, LMC has been there for all of us.

LMC listens as well. The College has two expiring millages in 2026. They are asking for renewal of the operating millage which provides 20 percent of the college’s budget. That is vital funding for operations. The rate would not increase for 20 years. The second millage, the capital millage, is being cut in half. It is currently .48 mills on your property tax bill, and the College is asking it to be reduced to .24 mills. LMC has always been fiscally responsible and has the highest credit rating among Michigan community colleges. I applaud LMC for understanding that no one likes property taxes, and their willingness to do more with less. Both deserve a Yes vote. It is important for the future of our community.

Join me in voting Yes by absentee ballot or on November 4th.
