BUCHANAN — Head coach Mark Frey felt his Buchanan football team left a lot on the field in last week’s loss to Battle Creek Pennfield.
The Bucks made sure to leave nothing behind Friday to the tune of a 64-6 win over rival Brandywine to improve their season record to 3-1. The Bucks dominated the game, outgaining Brandywine in total yards 420-67 and earning 24 first downs to Brandywine’s six.
“I was really proud of our guys and how we bounced back from last week,” he said. “Our goal tonight was to limit those mistakes and execute at a higher level and I thought they did.”
The Bucks’ scoring began in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Carson Deming. Brody Reed added an 8-yard touchdown run and Owen Thompson caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Zeiger.
Buchanan’s offense continued to produce in the second quarter, with Max Cornelius scoring on an 11-yard run and Reed adding another 8-yard rushing touchdown. Reed also caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Zeiger. In the third quarter, Deming scored on a 41-yard run and
Jameson Pleasant added a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
Kavion Goss scored the final touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
For the game, Cornelius led all rushers with 157 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Deming had 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Zeiger completed five of six passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns. Reed led the team in receiving yards with 30 and also scored two rushing touchdowns.
“They all said last week wasn’t good enough and so they came in,fired up and ready to go,” Frey said. “Our job is to try to mix it up and get those guys the ball the best way we can and tonight I felt like we did a good job of mixing it up across the board and getting those guys an opportunity and they took advantage of it.”
On defense, Pleasant had five total tackles and one sack for Buchanan and Reed and RJ Scoggin each had one interception while Zeiger and JonTel Williams-Bruton each recovered a fumble.
Brandywine’s only score came in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Kaeden Warfield to Nylen Goins. The Bobcats are now 0-4 on the season.
“We need to be more consistent,” said Brandywine head coach Jeff Miller. “We have talent on this team but we’re not executing consistently enough to be successful.”
Freshman Parker Anglin saw time at quarterback for the Bobcats. Miller said that Anglin is on the team’s leadership council.
“It speaks to how much his teammates respect him for him to be a leader as a freshman,” Miller said. “I’m excited to see how he grows going forward.”
Frey likes what he is seeing from his team as the season nears the halfway point.
“This is a really fun team to coach,” Frey said. “They come hungry every day and the defense is owning their role real well right now. We’re not giving up a ton of points.”
Frey also highlighted the unselfish play of the offense.
“Everyone is not worried about themselves,” Frey said. “They’re worried about the offense as a whole, and it’s good to see us move the ball down the field methodically and rather than ‘I need the ball, I need this and that.’ “It’s a real team atmosphere. It’s a lot of fun to coach.”
The Bucks travel to Berrien Springs Friday for a 7 p.m.
