Woman struck, killed by vehicle in Niles

NILES — A 56-year-old Niles woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning, according to the Niles Police Department.
At approximately 6:58 a.m. Tuesday, emergency personnel were dispatched to the corner of Broadway and South Third St., in the City of Niles for a vehicle vs pedestrian injury crash. Upon arrival personnel found Namita Smadder with serious head injuries. Smadder was treated at the scene by EMS and firefighters before being transported to Corewell Health Niles Hospital. She was later transferred to Memorial Hospital South Bend, where she passed away.
Investigators determined that Smadder was attempting to cross Third St. at the Southwest corner when she was struck by a vehicle driven by 59-year-old David Roeder, of Niles, that was attempting to make a right had turn from East bound Broadway Street to S. Third Street. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit assisted with the investigation.
