Police identify suspect in fatal officer-involved shooting in Niles Township

NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — Michigan State Police have identified the man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday in Niles Charter Township.
The 48-year-old South Bend resident, identified as Joshua Coffey, was killed on June 30 in the 1400 block of South Third Street. At approximately 6 p.m. Monday, a deputy encountered a vehicle on the 1400 block of South Third Street, south of Fort Street, in Niles Charter Township.
When the deputy approached the vehicle, the passenger, Coffey, fled on foot and the driver fled in the vehicle southbound on Third Street. As the deputy was in a foot pursuit with Coffey, Coffey produced a firearm and discharged it at the deputy. The deputy then returned fire at the Coffey, killing him.
The Michigan State Police were then requested and are performing the investigation into the incident. As a standard protocol, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
