State police investigate fatal officer-involved shooting in Niles Township

NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — The Michigan State Police Investigative Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Monday night in Niles Charter Township.

At approximately 6 p.m. Monday, a Berrien County Sheriff’s Office deputy encountered a vehicle on the 1400 block of South Third Street south of Fort Street in Niles Charter Township. When the deputy approached the vehicle, the passenger fled on foot and the driver fled in the vehicle southbound on Third Street. As the deputy was in a foot pursuit with the male subject, the male subject produced a firearm and discharged it at the deputy. The deputy then returned fire at the suspect, killing him.

The Michigan State Police were then requested and are performing the investigation into the incident. The names of the deceased suspect and the deputy are being withheld pending further investigation. As a standard protocol, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
