EDWARDSBURG — The Edwardsburg School Board approved several new hires and extended their superintendent contract at their regular monthly meeting on Monday.
Superintendent Dr. Courtney Szucs saw their contract extended to the 2027-28 school year.
“On behalf of the school board and our entire school community we want to really extend our sincere thank you and appreciation for everything you’ve done,” said Board President Tony Overmyer.
Several teacher and staff positions were filled at the meeting. The board also approved the hiring of Ryan Towner for the position of assistant superintendent.
Athletic Director Jon Pobuda brought multiple track and field athletes to the attention of the meeting for their recent MHSAA Track & Field All-State achievements, including Sarah Pippin for placing third in the girls high jump, Mobius Stubblefield for placing seventh in the Boys 400 meter dash and Zachary Overmyer for earning a state championship in the boys high jump. Overmyer also recently returned from Oregon, where he finished in 12th place in national competition.
The meeting was preceded by a budget hearing for the General Fund Budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. Michigan law requires a budget hearing be held prior to formally adopting a General Fund Budget. The board received an update on future funding and expenses. With no concrete numbers on school funding yet delivered from the Michigan Legislature and special funds ending from the COVID-19 era, the district is planning conservatively with their budget. The budget was approved later during the regular meeting.
The date for graduation in 2026 was officially chosen as Thursday, May 21. It was also noted that the day would be made into a half day of school for other students in order to avoid complications with student pick-up at the elementary school.
A new student handbook was adopted, updating details regarding bus routes and pick up times, as well as adding smart watches to the list of “distracting items” and adding changes to the student dress code.
Trustees heard several updates regarding the status of goals set out by the district in recent years, including various plans to improve communication between the district and parents. The district is beginning to use new communication apps and will be using more consistent branding. Parent advisory committees will also continue to be used to help advise the board.
The new school board meeting will take place on Monday, July 7th at 7pm in the District Administrative Center Board of Education Room.
