NILES — Residents on Niles’ east side found themselves without power from Tuesday afternoon to early Wednesday morning after experiencing multiple outages.
According to a Thursday afternoon news release from the city, the root cause was identified as a faulty voltage regulator at one of the City’s substations.
The malfunctioning regulator caused inconsistent voltage levels in the power delivery system, leading to sporadic outages in different areas and making it more difficult to pinpoint the source of the problem. City line workers initially attempted to manually adjust the regulator, but it failed to respond.
As a result, crews rerouted electricity through alternate systems. Unfortunately, the added load caused a transformer to fail, leading to an additional outage.
Crews worked through the night to resolve the issue. A new voltage regulator was installed, and the damaged transformer was bypassed. Power was fully restored to affected areas by approximately 4:00 a.m. Wednesday.
This incident was further complicated by one of the substations being offline for scheduled maintenance, which contributed to the duration of the outage.
The city thanked residents for their patience and understanding as our team worked to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.
