DOWAGIAC — After almost a decade as a Dowagiac councilman, Ward 1’s Pat Bakeman is running to become the city’s mayor.
Bakeman, a 1998 graduate of Dowagiac Union High School and owner of Bakeman Barbers, announced his candidacy in April in order to give someone from Ward One the opportunity to prepare to fill his seat on the City Council. He will be hosting a Meet the Candidate Night at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 at Venue 132, 132 Front St. The event will be an opportunity to meet Bakeman, hear his vision for the future of the city and ask questions.
“As a proud resident of Dowagiac, I take great pride in our community and in working toward a better future—for my family and for all the families who call this area home,” Bakeman said. “Change is inevitable, and I believe our community is ready for it.”
The husband and father of three is one of the founders of Dowagiac Connected (Formerly known as The Young Professionals of Greater Dowagiac), a member of the Dowagiac Lions and has been doing play-by-play commentary for Dowagiac Chieftain football games for the local radio station since 2006. He has also been coaching youth sports for years.
Bakeman was elected to the city council in 2017 after being approached by several people asking him to consider getting involved with the city’s leadership. He served on the Economic and Development Board from 2017-21 and is a member of the Planning Commission and Russom Park Board.
“My family and I have always been committed to improving our city and creating opportunities for everyone, because this is our home—and we believe in the strength and potential of Dowagiac,” Bakeman said. “Ultimately, this decision came down to timing: for me, for my family, and for what I believe is the right moment for our city.”
With more than 20 years of business experience in downtown Dowagiac and eight years on council, Bakeman believes he is the best candidate to serve the city into the next chapter.
“My deep roots in this community and my ongoing commitment to its growth have prepared me to lead with both vision and practicality,” he said. “I’m excited to campaign throughout the summer and share my ideas for a stronger, vibrant future for us all.”
Bakeman said serving on city council has strengthened his commitment to the community and has given him the opportunity to help people throughout the city.
“It’s also helped me gain a deeper understanding of the processes and procedures of our local government,” he said. “My time on council has been personally rewarding and I believe I’ve served Ward 1 and the entire city well… This experience has provided me with a deep understanding of both our local government and the needs of our residents. As a youth sports coach, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with parents, grandparents, and our young athletes, gaining valuable insight into both their appreciation and concerns.
“I am committed to leading with the same passion and dedication that has guided my service and I look forward to continuing to make our community a better place to live, work and play.”
Bakeman’s family has called Dowagiac home for generations. He said he is committed to working hard to make it a community where residents feel proud to raise their families.
“Dowagiac is a special place because of its people and the strong relationships we’ve built within our community,” he said. “Time and time again, this city has shown its true spirit by lifting each other up and stepping in to help whenever there’s a need. It’s that unwavering sense of togetherness that makes Dowagiac feel like home.”
