Brandywine’s Peterson places third in D4 state finals

MIDLAND — Louisa Peterson made a statement Saturday at the Division 4 State Tennis Finals in Midland.

The sophomore, Brandywine’s No. 4 singles player, earned a third place finish in the tournament, defeating Claire Springs of Harbor Shores 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the semifinal round where she fell 6-0,6-0 to eventual state champion Nina Malani of Ann Arbor Greenhills. Peterson’s performance helped the Bobcats earn a 10th-place finish in the tournament. Brandywine finished with seven points, tied with Buchanan. Ann Arbor Greenhills won the team title with 38 points.

In flight one, teammate Sydney Olsen won her opening round matchup with Katie Meints of Kalamazoo Christian 6-1,1-6,4-0 before falling in round two to Notre Dame Prep’s Francheska Daugaru 6-3,6-3.

Brandywine’s doubles team of Ashlyn Kohler and Allie Curtis-Lee defeated Lansing Catholic’s Grace Currie/Lily Rule to advance to round three before falling 6-3/6-2 to Sara Okka/Sophia Gust of Notre Dame Prep.

For Buchanan, Hana Yamagata advanced to round three in flight three after beating Katelyn Ellis of Jackson Lumen Christi 6-3,6-7,8-0. Eventual runner-up Elliana McClellan defeated Yamagata 6-0/6-1. In flight three doubles, Lillian Wegener/Morgan Weldy made it to round three before falling to Elliott Baetens/Katey Buchanan 6-0,6-1. Flight four doubles duo Emily Holt/Taylor Sweeney also made it to round three before coming up short against Meera Pandey/Meera Tewari of Ann Arbor Greenhills 6-2/6-2.

Division 3

The Eddies of Edwardsburg tallied seven points for a 10th place finish at the University of Michigan. Detroit Country Day won the team championship with 34 points. 

Julia Lewis advanced to the third round in Flight 2 before falling 6-1,6-2 to eventual champion Caroline Liu of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood. Also advancing to round three was Verona Moody, who in flight three lost to eventual champion Karishma Vakhariya 6-3,6-1.

In flight 2 doubles, Mara VanBuren/Olivia Closs advanced to the third round before falling 6-1,6-3 to Addie Grebinski/Noor Mahmoud of Detroit Country Day.
