NILES — Dozens of friends, family and community members gathered at Michiana Christian Embassy, 1922 E. Main St., Niles, Tuesday night as 54 graduates from Niles Adult Education, Niles Cedar Lane and WAY Niles programs were able to be recognized for their hard work and call themselves high school graduates.
Howard-Ellis Assistant Principal Heather Loos was the night’s guest speaker and delivered words of encouragement to the graduates.
“Many of you are sitting here tonight, thinking you’ll never step into school again – believe me, I’ve been there,” she said. “But don’t confuse being done with school with being done with learning. Education isn’t just school. It’s growth, it’s freedom, it’s the power to choose what you want next. So, choose something. Try something and don’t stop. This moment should not be taken lightly. You all should be very proud. You are capable, you are resilient and you are enough. Just as you are? I will leave you with my favorite quote from Ellen Johnson Solis: ‘If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.’ Congratulations Class of 2025, Go make the most of your life because it’s yours.”
Jennifer Kirksey of NCS Custodians presented two Kick The Can Scholarships to Brooke Loftus and Trinity Cady. Prior to the presentation of graduates, the students were invited to the podium to dedicate their achievements to friends, teachers and family members.
Cedar Lane senior Brook Loftus was the class’ student speaker and congratulated his classmates and encouraged them to accomplish their goals.
“Give the people in your life the opportunity to try again,” she said. “Give second chances and take second chances. Just understand that every single person in the world is going to change. Just know that there is love to be found in every part of the world. Maybe you already have your second chance, so take a third or of fourth, however many it takes to get back on your feet.”
