Dear Editor,
How does Rep. Tim Walberg, (R., MI 5), begin a letter with “For far too long, our nation has dealt with reckless spending that has driven the United States into a fiscal crisis. The federal government currently has over $36 trillion in debt, with debt continuing to accrue each day” and then justify his vote for such spending? His “big, beautiful bill” raises the debt ceiling by four TRILLION more dollars, guaranteeing the kind of spending he claims to oppose, and cuts taxes on billionaires’ income, which is only partially offset by cuts to Medicaid, nutrition programs and health care research, all programs most Americans depend upon. The deficits and debt are going to explode, a situation Walberg’s fellow Republican calls a “debt bomb”.
It seems Walberg cares less for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren paying the debt created by his tax cuts for billionaire buddies. It wasn’t always this way. Rep. Walberg started his political career a fiscal conservative in the Michigan Legislature, and was opposed to this kind of fiscal irresponsibility as recent as 2021, (see https://walberg.house.gov/returning-fiscal-responsibility), I suppose it depends on who is proposing the profligate spending, which makes his actions the worst kind of partisan hypocrisy. Too bad.
