Brandywine, Buchanan girls tennis teams advance to D4 state finals

ALLEGAN — The Brandywine and Buchanan girls tennis teams will be heading to the state finals.

The Bobcats and the Bucks tied for runner-up at the Division 4 regional at Allegan to qualify as a team for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Championships. The Division 4 finals will be held in Midland on May 29.

Brandywine and rival Buchanan finished with 20 points while Dowagiac placed ninth overall with one point.

Leading the way for the Bobcats was sophomore Louisa Peterson, who defeated Buchanan’s Finley Kehoe 6-4,6-4 to win a regional championship in No. 4 singles. Buchanan – the 2025 SAC Lakeshore Division champions – also had a regional championship in the No. 3 doubles team Lillian Wegener/Morgan Weldy, who defeated Allegan’s Sophia Augustine /Emma Scheffler 7-6(5)/6-3.

Brandywine’s Ireland Prenkert advanced to the semifinals in no. 1 singles before falling to Schoolcraft’s Samantha Pavlak 6-2,6-4.  Buchanan’s Hana Yamagata defeated Brandywine’s Sydney Olsen 6-1,3-6,6-1 in the No. 2 singles semifinals before falling to Schoolcraft’s Lotta Groening 7-6(2),6-0 in the championship round. In No. 3 singles, Buchanan’s Alex Paturalski defeated Kendall Halstead 7-5,6-0 in the semifinal before falling to Berrien Springs’ Kaylee Kwon 6-3,6-3 in the championship. 

Brandywine’s Aubree Murray fell in the semifinals to Kwon 6-3,6-2.

In doubles action, Brandywine’s No. 1 doubles team of Ashlyn Kohler/Allie Curtis-Lee advanced to the semifinals, as did Buchanan’s No. 1 doubles duo of Olivia Kutemeier/Laura Sweeney. Brandywine’s Karleigh Byrd/Adeline Gill defeated Buchanan’s Sophia Bachman/Isabella Tibbles in No. 2 doubles to advance to the finals and Brandywine’s Chelsy Olson/Lily Gill made it to the semifinals in No. 3 doubles.

Holly Anderson/Allison Murray advanced to the No. 4 doubles finals for the Bobcats and Taylor Sweeney/Emily Holt made it to the semifinals in No. 4 doubles.
