Local athletes win D3 regional titles, qualify for state finals

BANGOR — It was a big day for area track athletes as the Michigan High School Athletic Association hosted its Division 3 Regional Meet at Bangor High School.
Buchanan’s Madeline Young earned four regional titles in four events. The Bucks’ 1,600-meter relay team of Young, Audrey Lietz, Justyce Cashier and Ava Graham ran a time of 4:23.23 and the 3,200-meter team of Adyson Baker, Young, Makynna Williams and Alaina Nagel posted a time of 10:46.26. Young also earned regional titles in the 1,600-meter run (5:41.70) and the 3,200-meter run (12:45.75).
Also qualifying for Buchanan was Audrey Lietz, who placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.63.
Brandywine qualified seven events for state, including two regional champions. Makenna Price earned a regional title in long jump with a distance of 16-2. Senior Miley Young took first place in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:30.95. Lily Gill placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles (16.65) and 300-meter hurdles (48.43).
The Bobcats also placed second in the 800-meter (Karleigh Byrd, Miley Young, Mackenna Price, Lily Gill in 1:50.57), 1,600-meter (Young, Byrd, Lily Gill, Price in 4:33.89) and 3,200-meter (Young, Alison Murray, Allison Kline, Emily Kline 10:58.78) relays to qualify for state.
On the boys’ side, several athletes took home medals. Cassopolis’ Aaron Buck-Hooper was regional champion in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.16 and Jaylen Pratt took first in high jump with a 6-0 leap. The 400-meter relay team of Nikolas Craig, Jaylen Pratt, Cameron Steward and Aarenn Buck-Hooper qualified for state with a time of 44.31.
Buchanan’s 3,200-meter relay team of Liam McBeth, Jack Sherwood, John Keser and Jacob Kuntz earned a regional title with a time of 8:30.40. The Bucks’ 800-meter relay team of Carson Deming, Tate Figy, Tyler Frame and Jackson Sherwood ran a time of 1:33.75 to finish second and qualify for the state finals and the 1,600-meter relay team of Sherwood, McBeth, Deming and Frame placed with a time of 3:35.46.
Individually, McBeth placed second in the 800-meter run with a 2:03.91 and Frame jumped a 6-0 to place second in high jump.
Brandywine’s Kaden Santana earned a regional title in long jump with a 20:11.75.
