Cassopolis man charged in connection with Dowagiac shooting incident

DOWAGIAC — A man arrested in connection with a shooting in Dowagiac back in March has been identified, according to police.
Jayunte Franklin, 22, of Cassopolis, is charged with discharging a weapon from a vehicle (10-year felony), carrying a concealed weapon (5-year felony) and felony firearm (2-year felony).
On Saturday, March 15, Dowagiac police were dispatched to the area of E. Wayne St. near McOmber St. in reference to some shots being fired in that area. Officers responded and located 3 shell casings along the street on E. Wayne St. There were no injuries or property damage from the incident.
Upon investigation of the initial incident, officers determined Franklin was a suspect. Aafter locating Franklin, he was interviewed and admitted to firing the weapon out of the vehicle he was in and admitted to firing the weapon into the air while riding down the street. Officers were able to locate and seize the weapon used in this incident and the investigation was forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.
A warrant was issued and Franklin was located in Cassopolis by a Cassopolis Police Department officer and taken into custody. He was lodged at the Cass County Jail, arraigned in Cass County District Court and is currently being held at the jail on a $10,000 bond.
