NILES — Community members gathered in front of Congressman Tim Walberg’s downtown Niles office Monday afternoon in support of GOP leaders.

GOP supporters gathered for a “Stand up for Trump” rally to voice support for President Donald Trump, Walberg, Rep. Brad Paquette and Senator Jonathan Lindsey.

“I feel like the movements in this country lately have been divisive and hateful and trying to get people to not like each other anymore and not work together anymore,” said GOP supporter Brenda Beadenkopf. “We need to encourage people to work together and do the right thing. We love what Donald Trump is doing and we know that the country is behind us.”

Across the street, a counter-protest took place organized by the Coalition 4 Democracy to voice concerns regarding the direction the country is heading under the Donald Trump administration.

“I am encouraged by the increase and the people standing up but it’s a very sad thing that we have to be out here in the first place,” said counter protestor Carol Drake. “It’s discouraging to think that we’ve come to this point. I hope that [GOP supporters] are not following just conservative resources. I hope that they’re also following factual coverage of what type of policies the administration is actually forcing over the American people and the rights that we are losing.”

GOP supporters hope people will give the current administration a chance.

“They are against Trump,” Beadenkopf said. “They don’t have anything good to say, all they want to do is to hate Trump and to me that is not the basis for a country to be… I encourage people to actually find out what Donald Trump is doing because the press will not tell you any of the good things he’s doing and the things that they do talk about, they twist and try to make it look bad. He’s doing a lot of good things for our country.”
