BUCHANAN — The Dowagiac girls soccer team came up just short against Buchanan Wednesday night, falling 4-3.

Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Chieftains rallied to tie the game before giving up a goal.

Johannah McDonald earned a hat trick with three goals and Brianna Garcia and Rylie O’Konski each had one assist.

“We played another solid game today,” said Dowagiac Coach Joe Pasternak. “We fell asleep for about 15 minutes in the first half and gave up three of the four goals in that time. The rest of the game, we pretty much controlled. Buchanan is good at capitalizing on your mistakes and they made us pay for it. We are still giving up the ball too much and allowing teams to have chances they shouldn’t be getting.

“I like our overall play and heart to keep fighting even after being down by three but we have to stop beating ourselves and putting ourselves in those spots”

The Chieftains beat the Titans 4-2 Monday in St. Joseph. Johannah McDonald tallied two goals and two assists and Brianna Garcia and Chloe Brewer each tallied one goal.

“We started off a little slow,” Pasternak said. “We came out unfocused and flat and gave up the early goal. After that we started to come alive and play our way moving the ball and getting opportunities to score but we just couldn’t finish in the first half. In the second half, we put it all together and finally got the lid off and started to score. I’m proud of the way the girls handled the struggles of the first half and were able to keep pushing and not shut down because things weren’t going right.”

Dowagiac hosts Niles at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to kick off the Dowagiac Invitational.
