CASSOPOLIS — Cass County Prosecutor Victor A. Fitz has announced that this week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
‘Kinship, Connecting and Healing’
In support of victims of crime and their loved ones, the Cass County Community is once again joining forces to promote service, trust and hope. Prosecutors, elected officials, area schools, students, law enforcement, representatives of the judicial system and other citizens are taking part in the 2025 celebration of victim empowerment in Cass County.
The 2025 theme “Kinship, Connecting and Healing” provides an opportunity to reinforce Cass County’s victim-centered approach. Engaging the entire community helps us reach as many victims as possible and expand options for services.
All week: Grade school artwork display at the Cass County Law and Courts Building
Grade school student artwork will be on display throughout this week at the Cass County Law & Courts Building in Cassopolis. The artwork is part of the annual student competition for the “Going to Court” booklet provided to youthful crime victims as part of their courtroom preparation. Contributors to this year’s artwork include Cass County Elementary schools from Cassopolis, Edwardsburg and Marcellus.
Thursday, April 10: Going to Court Book Cover Contest winners at Commissioners meeting
Winners and finalists of the 14th annual grade school “Going to Court Book Cover Contest” will be announced during the Cass County Board of Commissioners Meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 5 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse. This booklet helps child witnesses and victims as they prepare for their court proceedings. The grade school contributors of this artwork, along with their families and friends will be present to personally accept award certificates for their creations. The competition is sponsored by Prosecutor Fitz’s Crime Victim Unit.
Friday, April 11: Flagpole Ceremony
This year’s Annual Flagpole Ceremony is being held at noon Friday, April 11 in front of the Cass County Law & Courts Building in Cassopolis. This is a time for family members and the community to remember loved ones who were lost to crimes of violence. During this brief ceremony, the victims’ names are read aloud and a flower placed by a memorial dedicated to their memory. Prosecutor Fitz will also share a few words in support of these families and the loved ones whom they have lost.
Flagpole Reception
A reception will take place immediately following the Flagpole Ceremony referenced above. This gathering is hosted by Prosecutor Fitz’s Office. At that time light refreshments and beverages will be served.
Community members are encouraged to join in the week’s activities and get involved in helping victims of crime by contacting the Cass County Victims’ Rights Unit at (269) 445-4460.
