SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN — More than 95 percent of all I&M customers had power restored as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night following severe weather last Sunday that included a confirmed tornado near Edwardsburg.
I&M employees, mutual assistance personnel and contractors were successful in restoring several large customer outages Tuesday, including getting the lights back on for more than 4,000 customers in Niles after a substation suffered damage in the storm. At peak, approximately 60,000 I&M customers were without power. More than 55,30 customers have been restored with approximately 3,000 Indiana and approximately 1,300 Michigan customers without service.
I&M anticipates remaining customers who can receive power will be restored later Tuesday evening or Wednesday. Crews will work throughout the night to restore power for customers. I&M has a robust 2,700-member storm restoration team from nine states helping communities get power back as safely and as quickly as possible. I&M urges the public to remain a safe distance away from crews restoring power. Restoration crews have been working around the clock since last Sunday evening but remain in good spirits and are dedicated to safely restoring power to all impacted customers. Crews will work Wednesday in the hard-hit areas of Elkhart and St. Joseph County in Indiana and in Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan. Its teams will focus on replacing broken and damaged poles, restringing power lines and repairing various equipment to restore remaining customers.
Damage assessment is nearly complete. In Indiana, crews discovered 993 individual spans of downed power lines, 166 broken or damaged poles and 26 damaged transformers. In Michigan, crews report finding 314 individual spans of downed power lines, 152 broken or damaged poles and 27 damaged transformers.
