NILES — A Niles Community Schools teacher has been placed on leave after a video posted on the internet purported the teacher attempting to conduct inappropriate behavior with a minor.

The teacher was placed on administrative leave Tuesday as the district begins an internal investigation, stated Superintendent Adam Burtsfield in a letter to parents.

“At Niles Community Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priorities,” he said. “As such, we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all. We want to inform you that the district has been made aware of a situation involving a high school staff member. While we are unable to share specific details due to this being a personnel matter, we want to assure you that we are taking this matter very seriously. The staff member has been placed on administrative leave while the district conducts an internal investigation.

“Additionally, we have contacted the local police department to ensure that the appropriate authorities are involved.”

A video of the teacher being confronted by what appears to be a group that sets up sex sting operations and records them was widely circulated throughout the Niles community prior to him being placed on leave. The video allegedly shows the teacher inside his vehicle intending to meet a teenager he messaged on the internet. He was then met by adult representatives from the non-law enforcement group, who confronted him about the messages. After being confronted, the teacher quickly drove away.

“We understand that this news may raise concerns, and we appreciate your trust as we work through this process,” Burtsfield said. “Please know that we remain committed to transparency within the limits of the law and will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students. As we work through this process, we will continue to cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities.

“Once the investigation is complete, we will take any necessary actions in accordance with NCS Board policies, as well as federal and state laws.”
