CASSOPOLIS — A former Cassopolis resident can keep her misdemeanor charge of domestic violence completely off her record if she is successful on probation.
The former resident, now of Centreville, pleaded guilty to domestic violence and was sentenced Friday in Cass County Circuit Court to nine months probation, credit for two days served, completion of an anger management program and $1,545 in fines and costs.
The incident occurred Sept. 26, 2024 in Cassopolis when she assaulted a relative of her boyfriend as well as resisted police. The felony charge of resisting and obstructing police was dismissed.
“When police came, you started yelling at people and continued to be argumentative.” said Cass County Circuit Court Judge Mark Herman. “You were given the opportunity to leave the scene, refused to cooperate and taken to ground and arrested. I hope you’ve learned something about not cooperating.”
“I have sent people to prison before for assaulting police, it’s not something we tolerate in a civil society,” he added. “You’re only 18 yrs old and this is your first criminal conviction. I hope you learn quickly that violence gets you nothing but trouble and sometimes nowhere but jail.”
