DETROIT — Maddison Ward’s bid for a repeat state title ended one win short Saturday night.

Ward of Niles was pinned by Kaili Manuel of Romeo in the girls 155-pound title match at the Individual State Wrestling Championships at Ford Field.

Ward, who finished 30-1, had reached the title match with two pins and an overtime win over Grand Haven’s Isabelle Wisenbaugh. But she was no match for Manuel, who won the state 140-pound title a year ago and finished 42-0.

Ward won the 171-pound title last year at Brandywine before transferring to Niles.

Two area boys placed with Niles’ Sam Rucker (36-3) fourth at 171 pounds in Division 2 and Dowagiac’s Cal Chapman (42-4) was fifth at 285 in Division 3.
