DOWAGIAC — The Edwardsburg and Buchanan boys basketball teams extended their seasons Wednesday in Division 2 district semifinal play.
The Eddies defeated Berrien Springs and the Bucks bested Benton Harbor 39-36.
The Eddies overcame an 11-0 deficit to start the game and trailed 25-22 at halftime. In the third quarter, Edwardsburg used a 13-4 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. Brody Schimpa led all scorers with 21 points and Connor Solarek and Matt Enders scored eight apiece. JJ Frakes led Berrien Springs with 17 points and Micah McFarland had 15.
“We knew they’d be tough,” said Edwardsburg coach Jared Frick. “We played them the first game of the year but they’re obviously much more improved. JJ’s a really good player but we like to think we have some good players too, and Brody was great tonight. We started the game off poorly down 11 but we had our own 11-0 run in us. I’m just proud of them. They work really, really hard.”
In the second game of the evening, the Bucks overcame a slow start offensively to edge the Tigers in a slugfest. Trailing 26-17 in the third quarter after a 22-12 halftime deficit, the Bucks used a 16-0 run to take a 33-26 lead. The Tigers answered with an 8-0 run in the fourth to take a 34-33 advantage before the Bucks closed the game on a 6-2 run.
Karmine Brown led Buchanan with 14 points and Liam McBeth added 11 points while Logan Wiggins tallied seven. Kasean Hobbs had 13 points to lead Benton Harbor and Zamier Clayton added 10.
