February 28, 1954 – February 18, 2025

Gary Allen Hughes, 70, of Edwardsburg, died peacefully but unexpectedly Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

His life began February 28, 1954 in Niles, Michigan, the second of four children born to Frank and Olive “Rusty” Hughes.

Gary enjoyed motorcycles, fishing, and horses. He always had a dog with him and enjoyed their company throughout his life. His whole life was his family. He included them in games and looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. He would enthusiastically include them in playing dominoes, poker, and pinochle as well as other card games. He also looked forward to playing chess with his grandson Andrew as well as other loved ones. Gary loved sporting events, specifically college football and basketball. He was always a Notre Dame fan, and later became a Michigan State fan after his son Rick graduated from MSU. He always looked forward to going out to Outback Steakhouse and was their #1 fan. He was not much of a cook (and burnt most of it, including garlic bread) but enjoyed good food. He was a man of many trades, including being a CNA, a train brake man, and most notably a truck driver. He loved traveling and enjoyed his time on the road, as well as traveling on cruises. Gary had a contagious sense of humor and there was no “off” button to his jokes.

Gary will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his special friend Sheila Hensley; son, Rick (Marilyn) Myers; daughter, Tiffany (Lamonte II) Joiner; stepsons, John Hensley, Nathan Hensley; grandchildren, Alexis Myers, Andrew Myers, Mister Joiner, Lamonte Joiner III, Matthew Hensley; sister, Dawn Wells; brother, Frank “Buddy” Hughes; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Diane Larson; and nephew, Daniel Wells.

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, 68961 Lake Street, Edwardsburg, Michigan 49112. (Please be aware that GPS can be misleading occasionally.) Following the service there sill be a gathering in the church fellowship area to share a bit to eat and continue sharing memories and telling stories.
