BUCHANAN — The Buchanan soccer team made quick work of Coloma in the opening round of Division 3 district play Wednesday night.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Bucks reeled off nine consecutive goals in the first half to earn a 9-1 victory.
“We played them early in the season and beat them 8-1,” said head coach Ryan Haines. “Obviously, them scoring right away wasn’t part of the plan, but that just goes to show, it doesn’t matter which team it is – if you’re not locked in and focused on the game, anything can happen against a team like Coloma or anybody. That mistake will be corrected and we’ll do that moving forward.”
Mason Frontczak led the team with five goals and had two assists and Easton May tallied a hat trick to go along with three assists while Jacob Kuntz also scored a goal. Charlie Cowart made one save in net. Frontczak has 23 goals on the year and May has 15 goals and 16 assists on the year. The Bucks have outscored their opponents 59-17 this year.
Tyrell Taylor-Owens scored Coloma’s lone goal.
“It’s been a connection between (Frontczak and May) most of the year,” Haines said. Probably half of May’s goals have been to Mason. There’s been a good connection between those two. Having Mason be a senior does hurt a little bit but having May be a sophomore, we have him for a couple more years, so that’s good. Between the two of them, no matter the opponent, they still give it as much as they can but in this case, we were able to get eight goals between the two of them and put the game away.”
The win brings Buchanan’s record to 13-2-3 as it prepares for Monday’s district semifinal game at 7 p.m. at Berrien Springs.
“It’s really been outstanding across the board,” Haines said. “As a first year coach for me coming off the team that it was last year, it’s good that we’re a 13-win team this year,” Haines said. We’re young, we’ve got nine freshmen and I start four of them, so we have a lot to build on as we progress. The guys are happy, obviously the parents are, too. The one thing that I’ve stressed with them is that when we’re here, we’re here to conduct business but the game should be fun no matter what. You can tell right now that’s what we’re having.”
