Alcohol likely led to fatal crash on I-94

LAKE TOWNSHIP — A Chicago man was killed early Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash police suspect was the result of a Covert man driving while intoxicated.

According to a press release, troopers from the Michigan State Police Niles Post were dispatched to westbound I-94, mile marker 19 in Lake Township at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday.Police located a 26-year-old Covert man who crashed his passenger car into a motorcycle traveling west on the highway.

Police believe the vehicle rear-ended a motorcycle being driven by a 33-year-old Chicago man. The motorcyclist died as a result of serious injuries sustained in the crash. The other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to Spectrum Health Lakeland Hospital and released.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was deemed intoxicated, and subsequently lodged at the Berrien County Jail and charged with operating while intoxicated causing death.

The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.

The Michigan State Police Niles Post was assisted by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Lincoln Township Police Department, Lake Township Police Department, Lincoln Township Fire Department and Medic 1 Ambulance.
