NILES — A Niles nursing home has been hit by COVID-19.

Monday morning, Gillian Conrad, communications manager for the Berrien County Health Department, confirmed that an unknown number of residents at West Woods of Niles nursing facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

“Testing is ongoing at West Woods,” Conrad said. “There will probably be a few more positives, but we can confirm there have been positive test results.”

With a lack of concrete number given, Conrad said the health department expected results “within the first couple days of this week.”

The lab at the state testing facility had reportedly experienced technical difficulties over the weekend, slowing test result turnaround.

In accordance with guidelines put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19, Conrad said that area long-term nursing facilities are not currently receiving visitors and staff are limiting interaction with the residents living there.
