Niles man pinned under car dies of injuries

HOWARD TOWNSHIP — A Niles man died a car jack failed and pinned him underneath a vehicle Friday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Charles Horner Jr., 45, of Niles, was reportedly working on a vehicle when the jack supporting the vehicle failed, causing the vehicle to fall and pin Horner underneath it.

The sheriff’s department was dispatched to the home in the 1100 block of Huntly Road in Howard Township at around 5 p.m. Friday.

Other people at the home found Horner, lifted the vehicle and initiated CPR until emergency services arrived. Horner was transported to Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in Niles, where he succumbed to his injuries.

SMCAS Ambulance, Howard Township Fire and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
