CASSOPOLIS — A teleconference meeting of the Cass County Board of Commissioner was over as soon as it began Thursday.

Due to concerns raised by an unnamed commissioner about a potential violation of the Open Meetings Act, Thursday’s county board meeting was adjourned and postponed until 6:30 p.m. Monday. According to Roseann Marchetti, the Cass County Prosecutor and the board of commissioners will use the extra time to investigate whether the planned teleconference meeting could have been in violation of the Open Meetings Act.

The meeting was previously scheduled to be hosted via a conference call the public could dial into, as in person meetings are currently facing heavy restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since mandates restricting face to face contact between individuals, Gov. Whitmer has allowed for government meetings to take place remotely.

Marchetti said the county was currently looking into video options for meetings through programs such as Zoom, which was used by neighboring Berrien County to host a board of Commissioners meeting Thursday morning.
