EDWARDSBURG — A late second-quarter surge allowed visiting Dowagiac to grab a 29-24 halftime advantage, which the Chieftains turned into a 59-49 Division 2 district boys basketball opening-round victory Monday night.

The Chieftains (15-6) outscored the Eddies (12-9) 30-25 in the second half to advance to Wednesday night’s semifinal game against Berrien Springs. It was the third meeting between the two Wolverine Conference South Division rivals. The two teams split regular-season games on their home courts.

At Bridgman, defending district champion Cassopolis took its first step toward repeating as the Rangers edged host Bridgman 44-38 in Division 3 play at the Hive.

Cassopolis (16-5) advances to the Wednesday night semifinal against Benton Harbor Countryside. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Brandywine and Watervliet will play in the first semifinal at 6 p.m.
