Niles girls, Gourlay, Phillips advance to state bowling finals

NILES — The Niles girls bowling team advanced to the Division 2 state finals this weekend with a third-place finish at the regional in Kalamazoo last Friday.

Coldwater won the regional championship with 3,864 pins, while Wayland was second with 3,216 pins and Niles third with 3,189. The top three teams advance to the state championships, which will be Friday and Saturday at Century Bowl in Waterford.

The Vikings just missed out of qualifying the boys team as well. Niles finished fourth at the Division 2 regional, but did advance freshman Trenton Phillips and senior Drew Gourlay, who finished fourth and ninth during the individual regional, which was last Saturday.

The Niles girls team averaged 151.857 as a team at the regional. Ydalee Sotelo led the Vikings with a 562 series, while Alayna Duis had a 496 series, and Chevelle Jaynes had a 455 series. Shelby Jaynes finished with a 233 series.

Sotelo also had the top individual game as she rolled a 206.

Byron Center won the Division 2 boys regional championship with 3,925 pins. Thornapple-Kellogg was second with 3,902 pins, and Coldwater was third with 3,896 points. Niles was fourth with 3,749 pins on Friday.

Phillips finished fourth at the individual regional on Saturday with an average of 191.6. Gourlay averaged 185.5 to place ninth. The top 10 individuals advance to the state finals this weekend.

Phillips’ best game was a 212. He also rolled a 204 and a 206.

Gourlay’s best game was a 203.

The Brandywine girls team placed fifth at the Division 3 regional hosted by M66 Lanes in Battle Creek. Coloma won the team title with 3,341 pins. The Bobcats finished with 2,879 pins.

Brandywine did not advance any individual bowlers to the state finals.
