BANGOR — There are some players that will not score 51 points the entire season, but for Cassopolis’ Darrion Gatson, that was one night’s work.

Gatson set a new Ranger school record with 51 points as Cassopolis defeated host Bangor 80-34 in a Southwest 10 Conference game Thursday night.

Gatson outscored the Vikings by himself with 39 points in the second half alone.

His 26-point third quarter sits only behind Detroit Cooley’s Larry Fogle, who had 32 points in the second quarter and then 27 points in the third quarter against Detroit Cody in 1972.

Bronson’s Rod Hathaway scored 27 points against Cassopolis in the fourth quarter in 1977, while Frankenmuth’s Brad Redford also scored 27 points against Hemlock in 2008.

Cassopolis (8-4, 8-2 Southwest 10) led 21-10 in the opening quarter and 35-17 by halftime.

Gatson, who is the area’s leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, took over in the second half as the Rangers poured in 45 points.

Besides Gatson, Jerry Johnson added 15 points.

Omar Jefferies led the Vikings with nine points. Zach Trainor added eight.

The Rangers return to action Tuesday night as they host Decatur in a Southwest 10 Conference contest. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
