NILES — The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home, officials said. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Thursday, Jan. 2
• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Storytime
Features three books, a color song, music and movement. For children 3 and older.
• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — American Mahjong
Volunteers are available to teach the game.
• 1:30 to 2 p.m. — Storytime
Features three books, a color song, music and movement. For children 3 and older.
• 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Niles Public Arts Commission meeting
• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters
A read-aloud storytime. Chips will be served, while a chapter book is read. Meant for all ages.
• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Building Challenge
Everyone is welcome to build a Lego creation under a certain theme. The creations will then be displayed in the library.
Friday, Jan. 3
• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — “A Healthy New You in the New Year”
This class is meant for those who want to become healthier. This space-limited class will meet in the board room and will present weight-loss apps and workout channels. To reserve a spot, call (269) 683-8545 ext. 112.
• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stiches
Rookies and avid sewers alike are welcome to this social event. Cups of coffee and tea are served, and a volunteer will be available to assist.
Saturday, Jan. 4
• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Puppy socialization
Dogs ages 10 weeks to 1 year old are welcome to this event. Registration and proof of DHPP, Bordetella, kennel cough and rabies vaccinations are required but are dependent on age. Use the library’s side door to enter.

• 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Open agility
A full agility course will be set up in the basement, complete with jumps, ramps and more for dogs to practice on. Proof of vaccination is required.

• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess club
All ages and abilities are welcome.
• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Chess tournament
The tournament is meant for members of the National Chess Federation, but boards will be available for non-members as well.
• 10:30 a.m. to noon — TreeClimbers Genealogy group
This group works to uncover family history. No experience in genealogy is required to join this group. Members complete their own personal projects with the help of other members and with library genealogical materials.
• 2 to 3 p.m. — Make and Take: Alcohol Ink Painting
Teenagers and adults of this month’s class will use alcohol ink to paint small jars for tealights. Register at the information desk or by calling (269) 683-8545 ext. 112.
• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Family Nerf Night
Families of children ages 12 and under can take part in a variety of Nerf games throughout the event. Nerf blasters can be brought in or a limited number can be borrowed through the library.

Monday, Jan. 6
• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Basic Email
This class in the board room will teach participants the basics of using email with Gmail and Yahoo. Call (269) 683-8545 ext. 112 to reserve a spot.
• 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night
Children ages 8 to 12 can play video games, board games and card games with others.
• 6 to 8 p.m. — Presentation and book-signing
Carl Rust will host a presentation and book-signing around his newest book, “Revolutions in Education – How to Eat an Elephant.” The retired educator will discuss whether schools have stayed relevant with an ever-changing landscape over the past century.
• 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Happy Destiny Support Group
This Alcoholics Anonymous meeting is for members to share their experience, strength and hope with each other. Meetings are held in the basement’s Bigford room.
