Brandywine, Niles pick up non-league wins

NILES — Host Brandywine and visiting Niles were both winners in girls basketball action Tuesday night.

The Bobcats improved to 5-0 on the year with a 46-28 win over visiting Kalamazoo Hackett, while Niles traveled to Kalamazoo to take on Loy Norrix in a SMAC non-divisional contest. The Vikings defeated the Knights 69-39 to its second consecutive 30-point victory.

Brandywine basketball

Hackett (2-2) was able to hang with Brandywine for one quarter, but the Bobcats’ constant pressure defense and outside shooting eventually took its toll.

Leading 11-5 after one quarter, Brandywine outscored the Fighting Irish 17-10 to open up a 28-15 halftime advantage.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats connected on four of their eight 3-pointers., including a pair from Megan Schmidt, who finished with 11 points to tie teammate Zakiyyah Abdullah for game-high honors. Schmidt finished with a trio of triples. Abdullah had a pair of 3-pointers to go along with one each from Malikiyyah Abdullah, Alysa Adamczyk and Bethany Duval.

Annie Housler led Hackett with 11 points.

Brandywine will host Comstock in a key BCS Red Division showdown Friday night. The Colts are the defending division champions. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Niles basketball

After blowing out Portage Nothern 61-31 last Friday night, Niles traveled to Kalamazoo to beat Loy Norrix by 30 points.

The Vikings (3-1) led just 16-14 after one quarter, but outscored the Knights 17-6 in the second quarter to open up a 33-20 halftime advantage. Niles exploded for 36 points in the second half, while holding Loy Norrix to 19.

“It was a complete team effort in the win over the Lady Knights,” said veteran Niles coach Jessica Johnson. “The Vikings had all 10 players on the scoreboard.”

Alycia Patterson led all scorers with 18 points to go along with three assists for the Vikings. Reese Davies finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Alexis Rauch had 10 points and seven rebounds.
