MaKenna Fonseca is a senior on the Niles girls basketball team.
What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?
MF: Undefeated in regular season for travel soccer.
What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?
MF: Quitting travel soccer.
Who is a “hero” in your life and why?
MF: My mom. She gives constant love and support for everything that I do. Balances work and family time to be there when I need her.
When are you the most nervous while you are competing?
MF: Messing up.
Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.
MF: Falling freshman year and unable to get up due to nine other girls trying to get the rebound.
How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?
MF: I go for runs by my house.
What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?
MF: Soccer, it is my main sport. I am very glad I chose to play basketball though.
Why are sports an important part of a high school experience?
MF: You get to meet others who you may not have known due to the sized of schools.
How would you give away $50,000?
MF: Give the money to continue research for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?
MF: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team.
If I did not play sports, I would…?
MF: Work. During the summer, I tend to work fulltime.
What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?
MF: Stay relaxed and not get too frustrated with yourself.
If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?
MF: You should be allowed to kick the ball to block a pass, even just sticking your foot out like in volleyball.
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
MF: I am a hard worker.
What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?
MF: Transfer schools my senior year. I am very, very glad I transferred.
What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?
MF: Someone held the door open for someone in a wheelchair.
What is your favorite hobby? Why?
MF: Reading books. Knowledge is power.
