Niles authors hosting book-signing event

NILES — Niles is home to numerous authors, and area residents will be able to see some of the community’s core members together on Saturday.

From 2 to 4 p.m. at 205 E. Main St., the former site of Atomic Bean Coffee, four Niles authors will answer questions and sell and sign their books.

Larry Barrett, Timothy Baylor and Doris Kelly will be there with their books, but the organizers of the event are its fourth author, Richard Beavo, and his wife, Carol.

“We personally knew these other three authors and thought it would be neat where all four of us could get together and present our books to the public,” Richard said.

Two general genres of books will be sold at the event: faith-based stories and children’s books.

“We’ll have four different tables set up, and the authors will be there,” Carol said. “They’ll have their books there, and they’ll be glad to answer any questions people have about their books.”

Barrett will promote his book, “Spirit of Error, Spirit of Truth: Preparing People for the Manifestation of God’s Power in Their Lives,” published in 2015.

It tells the true story of a married couple enduring a host of spiritual oppressions.

Baylor will promote his book, “The Law of Love: The Other Law of God,” reprinted in 2015.

His book discusses the two laws of God that he said are both followed. One leads to judgment, curse and death; the other, to forgiveness, grace and peace. “The Law of Love” explains and describes how to follow the later law.

Kelly will promote her book, “Mystery of the Copper Turtle,” published in 2009, and “The Gift of Summer Rain,” published in 2018.

These children’s books revolve around past events from northern Michigan’s past.

Kelly stated in a summary of both books that they help spark teaching about bullies, family dynamics, environmental issues, flora, fauna and weather.

Then there is Richard’s book, “Following the Way: A Field Manual for God Seekers,” published on Aug. 28 through WestBow Press. It is his first published book.

Within its pages, Richard describes the principles of life in Jesus Christ from the perspective of one of his followers, himself.

“It’s kind of a play on words from the Bible, where early Christians were called ‘Followers of the Way,’ and also [Richard’s] grandparents’ last name was Way,” Carol said.

Richard said he began his faith-based journey 61 years ago, but writing a book related to that journey was not his original intention. He initially began writing an autobiography for his children and grandchildren to read.

Then, something changed.

“I felt that God laid on my heart to leave my autobiography and to write a book that would show the things that helped that journey, that helped me gain a closer personal relationship with God and the things that hindered that relationship,” he said.

A few years later, “Following the Way” was published, but not without hard work and rewrites.

“It was like English 101 again,” Carol said with a laugh, recalling the numerous drafts and edits her husband made as he worked with WestBow’s editors.

Richard said he appreciated all the help his editors provided, however.

With other upcoming or new writers like himself in mind, Richard provided this advice: no matter what, complete a first draft.

“Grab a pad of paper and start writing, writing, writing,” he said. “Write, write, write. You [have] got to come up with that original manuscript.”

Richard will continue to “write, write, write,” this time not for future publishing, but for his personal autobiography for his family. He is picking up from where he started.
