Brandywine overcomes 2-0 deficit to earn third win of season

NILES — Brandywine soccer proved the age-old theory true — that no lead is a safe lead in the game of soccer — especially a 2-0 lead when Bryce Taberski and Andrew Schindler get moved from defense to up top with just minutes remaining in the first half.

Constantine may have been leading the Bobcats 2-0 in the first half after two early goals in the 16th minute and 19th minute of play, but their lead slowly extinguished as Taberski dominated on both sides of the field, beating Constantine’s center back on two plays— both of which resulted in goals.

The result was a 4-2 victory for Brandywine Thursday night.

“I just wanted to get up there and even it out, that way we could keep progressing forward,” Taberski said. “I just tried to use my skills to get by [their center back] and hopefully have a teammate open that I could pass to, and then give it right back to and score.”

Taberski, who said he trains with both feet, used his speed and left foot to tap the ball into the net past Constantine’s keeper with five minutes remaining in the half. As the half came to a close, Taberski found the back of the net a second time with less than two minutes remaining, after receiving a pass downfield from Schadler and slotting the ball past Constantine’s keeper again.

“When me and Bryce moved up from defense we had some good midfielders held back, so we just started clicking,” Schadler said of the two center defenders transitioning to forwards mid-play.

Schadler believes this new formation could be the key formation Brandywine has been looking for to get more scoring opportunities.

In the second half, both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities until the 63rd minute when center-midfielder Niklas Harrison scored a goal from outside the box off a rebound from teammate Cruz Sanchez. Just three minutes later, freshman Robert Hartz got his first goal of the season off a cross from Schadler.

“It just happened so fast,” Hartz said. “I just saw the chance and tapped it in and then I had a circle of all my teammates congratulating me. It just felt awesome.”

While Schadler and Taberski offensively tore up the field, coaches Dan Perry and Caleb Adams were making formation decisions of their own. With their center defenders up top creating scoring opportunities, the defensive line had to stay solid.

“We put younger guys in the back line and they played well,” Perry said. “They kept up the intensity.”

The new formation was previously tried out at a tournament over this past weekend, Schadler said, but the team did not click with it previously like they did tonight.

“I think that we worked better as a team tonight than we did in other games,” Schadler said. “We were just clicking on all cylinders. We had to make some subs we did put some freshman in on defense and they played well and kept up the intensity.”

As the scoring opportunities continued to improve for the Bobcats, who have struggled to score in previous games, they walked off the field with a third win of the season and a new hope in obtaining their goals.

“I hope we can consistently improve,” Schadler said as Taberski nodded his head in the background.

“We moved up the field really well,” Taberski said. “It’s awesome, I love it and it works. I hope we just do it more.”
