Niles, Bucks suffer losses

STEVENSVILLE — Zeke Rohl rushed for four touchdowns in host Lakeshore’s 42-20 SMAC West Division victory over Niles Friday night.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-3 on the season.

Rohl scored on runs of 2, 5, 1 and 3 yards. He finished the night with 59 yards rushing.

Aidan Jackson rushed for 145 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown as the Lancers rolled up 447 yards of total offense.

Niles managed 250 yards of total offense in the contest.

The Vikings got off to a good start as Javond Ball returned the opening kickoff 94 yards to give Niles a 7-0 lead.

Lakeshore quickly tied the game at 7-7, only to have Niles reclaim the lead on a Brayden Lake 13-yard pass to Jamison Zimmerman to make at 14-7 after Drew Gourlay connected on his second straight PAT.

From there, it was all Lakeshore.

The Lancers opened up a 28-14 halftime lead as Jackson scored and then Logan Miller recovered a Lakeshore fumble in the end zone.

Ball scored his second touchdown of the night as he caught a 19-yard pass from Lake.

Rohl would score three times in the second half to help turn the game into a rout.

Nate Goins led Niles in rushing with 47 yards on four attempts. Ball finished with 23 yards on five carries. Lake was 12-of-32 for 166 yards and the two touchdowns.

Ball caught five passes for 78 yards and Zimmerman four passes for 40 yards.

Defensively for the Vikings, Jason Matlock had six tackles. Demarien Nichols, Ryan Franco, Brandon Crawford, Ball, Dakota Hinkle, Matt Thompson and Leon Williams all had four tackles.

Williams and Connor Tibbitts both recovered fumbles for Niles, who hosts Mattawan for homecoming Friday night.

Buchanan football

BUCHANAN — A late Buchanan rally came up short against visiting Coloma Friday night.

The Bucks trailed the Comets (1-2) 14-0 when Sam Riley found the end zone on a three-yard run. The PAT was blocked, and Buchanan was unable to get the tying touchdown in a 14-6 loss that left it 0-3 on the season.

Neither team reached the end zone until the final 12 minutes of the game.

Noah Schwanke got the Comets on the board with 6:06 remaining in the contest. Drew Goodline’s conversion run was good and Coloma led 8-0.

Goodline would score the game-winning touchdown four minutes later on a one-yard run. This time the PAT failed.

Buchanan drove down the field on the ensuing possession and scored with 46 ticks remaining on the clock.

Defense was the star of Friday night’s contest as neither team reached the 200 yard mark.

Coloma outgained Buchanan 185 to 152 in total offense. The Comets ran for 118 of those yards. Buchanan conversely, threw for 136 of its yards.

Riley and Johnny Rager both finished with 68 yards passing. Riley was 7-of-12 and Rager 6-of-13.

Levi Zelmer led the team in receiving with three receptions for 36 yards.

Cam Lorance led the Bucks’ defensive with seven and a half tackles. Aiden Kile finished with six and a half tackles. Gavin Fazi had six stops.

Buchanan hits the road to face perennial state powerhouse Constantine Friday night.
