A Niles man is currently in stable condition following a shooting Saturday night on Wayne Street, according to the Niles Police Department.
Chief Jim Millin reported that officers were called to the scene of a reported shooting around 7:50 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Wayne Street in Niles. After arriving on the scene, officers found a 25-year-old Niles man lying in the street, suffering from at least two apparent gunshot wounds, one in his upper chest area and one in his leg.
Officers believe the victim was acquainted with the shooter or shooters and was traveling a vehicle with them at the time of the shooting, Millin said. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived and no arrests have been made as of 11 p.m. Saturday.
Initial investigation has led officers to believe that at least three shots were fired inside of the vehicle, though more may have been fired after the victim exited the vehicle.
According to Millin, there is evidence to suggest that the crime may have been drug-related.
“We have some leads and are following up on that,” Millin said.
Following the shooting, the victim was transported to an area hospital, where he remains in stable condition, according to Millin.
Millin said the police department would continue to investigate the case. He encouraged anyone with information relating to the shooting to contact the Niles Police Department at (269) 683-1313 or to submit an anonymous tip using TipSoft.com.
“All we ask is that citizens do their part to notify the police whenever they have information about a crime that has happened or more importantly a crime that they believe is going to happen,” he said. “This is our community. This is everyone’s community. If you don’t want to live in this, you have to speak up. You have to talk to us.”
