Niles Scream Park awards area students scholarships

NILES — The Niles Haunted House Board of Directors has recently announced the graduates who will receive scholarships from the Niles Scream Park community project. These graduates stood out based on their academic success, involvement in the Michiana community and future aspirations to become civic leaders, said board representatives.

The scholarship recipients are as follows:

• William F. Alford Jr. Memorial Scholarship —Taylor Altergott, Niles High School

• John Carlson Memorial Scholarship — Destiney Patrolia, Brandywine High School

• Keith Shurte Memorial Scholarship — Emily Burge, Brandywine High School; Grace Burge, Brandywine High School; Aynslee Myer, Niles High School

• Gottlieb Christ Memorial Scholarship — Benjamin Myers, South Haven High School

Since 1992, the Niles Scream Park has awarded $58,650 in scholarships to 153 local high school students.

The scholarships are made possible by the volunteers at the Niles Scream Park, said Scream Park staff. Each year, a select group of individuals donate their time to support local high school graduates. In addition to local scholarships, the Niles Scream Park community project supports more than 65 area charities and non-profit groups.

Proceeds benefit local school and service organizations including groups such as the Make a Wish Foundation, Boy Scouts, Pets Connect, Positively Dance and the Niles Drama Club (Four Flags Players).

Last year, the 45th consecutive year for running the project, raised more than $132,000. More than $1.9 million has been raised since 1996.

The Scream Park officially opens Friday, Sept. 13. The park is open from 8 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in September, from 7 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in October and 7 to 10 p.m. on Sundays in October and Thursday, Oct. 31.

The park is also open from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2 for the Black Out event.

The Scream Park is located at 855 Mayflower Road in Niles. The park  is accessed by taking exit 5 (Niles-Buchanan Road) from the US 31 Expressway.
