NILES — More than an inch of rain between Friday and Saturday added an extra challenge to the golfers participating in the second weekend of the Niles City Golf Tournament at Plym Park.

Standing water in several locations had to be dealt with as golfers made their way around the course a little bit on Saturday, but more so on Sunday during the final round.

Final scores did not reflect any specific issues playing the final two days, and multiple golfers commented on how great of shape the course was in despite how wet it was.

In the end, Dave Berger won back-to-back Championship Flight titles, while Matt Brawley and Andy Garland reclaimed titles by winning the A and B flights. Brawley needed a one-hole playoff to win his second city title.

Aaron Henderson captured the C Flight crown Sunday afternoon.

The scores were packed for two of the four flights with five strokes separating the top six golfers in the Championship Flight, while five strokes separated the top five golfers in the A Flight.

Berger held off Josh Townsley, finishing three strokes ahead of the runner-up, while Frank LaPorte and Nick Horn were just four shots off the pace in finishing tied for third.

“Absolutely,” answered Berger when asked if defending his title was tougher. “I did not have my ‘A’ game today, but I held on. I putted well. I started off terrible on the back nine, but I was able to hold on.”

Brawley needed just one playoff hole to win the A crown. He bogeyed No. 1, while runner-up Ryan Head had a double-bogey in the playoff hole. The two tied at 163 after playing 36 holes on the weekend.

“Going into the last hole, I was up one,” Brawley said. “But I choked. On the playoff hole, we both hit good drives, but he mis-hit his second shot. I got in for a bogey and he got in with a double-bogey.”

Garland and Henderson won their championships with a bit more breathing room. Garland captured his second city tournament in three years with a 167. Tim Howard was the runner-up with a 173.

“In 2017, I won the C Flight, but I couldn’t come last year,” Garland said. “Starting the last nine, myself and Tim [Howard] were down three to Dave [Daniels] and I just hung in there. I shot a pretty decent score on the back. I was pretty steady. I did not make any birdies on the back. I make some pars and bogeys and tried to make the best of it.”

Henderson, who was playing in his second city tournament, shot 177 to claim his first championship. John Saxton finished second with a 180.

“I tried to play today like a league round,” Henderson said. “I knew the guys I was playing with [today], but not that well, so I tried to play it just like a league round and it worked out pretty well.”

Shelby Jaynes won the Junior Division championship, played July 12, with a 53.  She defeated Noah Fletcher, who shot 57, and Jordan Waggoner, who shot 65.
