EDITORIAL: Support local veterans

Published 9:32 am Friday, July 12, 2019

Comfort and basic support for veterans can be difficult to come by, which is why we were happy to report in Wednesday’s and Thursday’s Niles Daily Star about fundraisers to support area veterans will be coming to Buchanan and Niles this weekend.

R-Vets is providing breakfast Sunday starting at 8 a.m. and lunch at 11 a.m. at a Michiana Cruisers Car Show at Buchanan’s Centennial Park. Breakfast will feature scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and pancakes. Lunch will feature hamburgers, brats, hotdogs, steamed sweet corn, salads, fruit, water and soda. The cost of meals will be an at-will donation, and all funds raised will go toward Battle Creek, Michigan’s VA Medical Center.

According to organizers, veterans of all ages are encouraged to attend the event.

According to R-Vets representatives, the goal of their organization is to fundraise for and host events that provide comfort to veterans. In particular, the organization seeks to engage patients in Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers for both physical and mental injuries. According to R-Vets representatives, comforts and familiarities are important to veterans in these facilities.

Before this, area residents can attend an Amvets fundraiser which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1117 E. Bertrand Road, across from Rural King in Niles Township. Guests can shop for hidden treasures at a yard sale on the lawn, enjoy a meal served by Bulldog BarBQ, and finish the meal off with a visit to the Ladies Auxiliary’s bake sale. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to support area veterans.

We are happy to have events that will support area veterans is coming to the Buchanan and greater Niles area.

Veterans have given much for their country and our safety — their time and their wellbeing. It is only right that we do what we can to support them in return.

We would encourage any available readers to head out to Buchanan this Sunday, gaze at some classic cars, enjoy an R-Vets breakfast or lunch, and donate to a worthy cause. We would also encourage them to attend the Amvets fundraiser.

It is the least any of us can do.
