Harry Darwin Zimmerman, 82, of Niles, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2019, surrounded by his family.
He leaves behind his wife, Mary (Tate), children Mike (Kristie) Zimmerman, Kim Zimmerman, Anthony (Tanja) Gaul, David (Linda) Gaul, and Tim (Lorraine) Gaul, as well as many beloved grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Norma and Nancy, and children Janet (Gaul) Groves and Jody Gaul.
He was born in Grand Rapids on June 10, 1936, to Norman and Alice.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Harry was a police officer in Holland. After that, he accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration, where he took several assignments in various locations. His longest assignment was at the South Bend Airport, where he was the Supervisor of air traffic control. After he retired, he worked at Auto Zone, where he could still enjoy his love of “tinkering.” He was a long-time resident of Niles.
Those who knew Harry, knew that he loved to tinker with his Lionel train collection and work on cars and home improvement projects. He knew many people in Niles and would make daily trips to the local markets just to say “hello” to friends.
He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
The family is holding a celebration of life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, in Niles, at Front Street Pizza, 510 Front St., Niles.
