Conservation district to host upcoming programs

CASS COUNTY — This summer, the Cass County Conservation District will host several events for the community to learn more about nature and the environment.
Cass County Conservation District upcoming programs include:
• 1 to 2:30 p.m., 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 23 — The district will present “Conservation Series: Intro to Permaculture,” with presenter Jeff Loucks. Attendees will learn a home gardening design principle based on the philosophy of working with, rather than against, nature called permaculture. The course will be presented from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Cass County Council on Aging, 60525 Decatur Road, Cassopolis, and repeated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Porter Township Hall, 69373 Baldwin Prairie Road, Union. • 1 to 2:30 p.m., 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 — The district will present “Conservation Series: Worm Bin Composting,” with presenter Korie Blyveis, Cass County Conservation District administrator. Attendees will learn how to easily convert organic waste to nutrient rich compost through worm composting (vermicomposting).
The event will also include a spotlight on the earthworm and other micro organisms involved in this process, which uses an easy to make home-made worm bin.
The course will be presented from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Cass County Council on Aging, 60525 Decatur Road, Cassopolis, and repeated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Village of Cassopolis Hall, 117 S. Broadway, Cassopolis. To RSVP, call (269) 445-8641 ext. 5.
• 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 — The district will present “MAEAP Field Day: Managing for Forestry Health and Profit,” with presenter Jason Darling, owner Darling Forestry LLC. The course will be presented from 4 to 7 p.m. at Crane Pond DNR office, 60887 M-40, Jones. The program offers two RUP credits and is co sponsored with SWMLC, DNR, SWxSW CISMA and MAEAP.
