NILES — Brandywine, led by Megan Schmidt’s 4.0 GPA, was one of three schools to earn Michigan High School Tennis Association Academic All-State for 2019.

The Bobcats went 11-0 in a rain-shortened season and captured another BCS Athletic Conference title, finished second at the Division 4 regional, and went on to place ninth at the Division 4 state finals at Kalamazoo College earlier this month.

Brandywine is 94-1-1 over the past seven seasons.

“Coach (Rich) Robbins and myself are proud of our team and their accomplishments on and off the courts,” said veteran Brandywine coach Joe Marazita. “Because they are such standout student-athletes, they are very coachable and understand strategies, which makes our jobs easier. Receiving this honor is the cherry on the sundae for our team and the Brandywine community.”

Also earning Division 4 Academic All-State honors was Buchanan. Edwardsburg earned Academic All-State in Division 2.

To receive the honor, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better.

Brandywine’s GPA this year was 3.40. Buchanan’s and Edwardsburg’s GPA were unknown at press time.
