Buchanan wins back-to-back district titles

BUCHANAN — It may have taken three days and two different fields, but the Buchanan baseball team is back-to-back Division 3 district champions.
The Bucks (22-8) completed their 13-6 victory over Berrien Springs Monday afternoon.
Buchanan and Berrien Springs began their search for a district championship on Saturday in Constantine.
Both teams won semifinal games against Constantine and Centreville before squaring off in the championship game.
The Bucks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning before the Shamrocks rallied to tie the game at 1-1.
Berrien Springs had the bases loaded and no outs when weather postponed the game until Monday.
The game resumed at Berrien Springs with the Shamrocks adding two more runs to take a 3-1 lead after one inning.
Berrien Springs would score twice more in the second inning to increase its lead to 5-1.
Buchanan responded with four runs in the third, two in the four and then six more in the fifth to turn the game into a rout.
Jacob Hoover worked the first four innings for the Bucks, allowing three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Brad VanOverberghe took over from there and allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Gannon Kutemeier came on in the seventh to record the final out.
The Bucks finished with 11 hits, including three from Kade Hearington. VanOverberghe and Brandon Rogers both finished with two hits.
Rogers homered for Buchanan, which also got a double from Adeen Harrington.
The Bucks now head to Lawton for its regional semifinal contest against Parchment at 5 p.m.
The winner advances to the regional championship at Coloma against either Bronson or Watervliet.
That game will be played at 12:30 p.m. with the winning team moving on to the quarterfinals at approximately 3 p.m.
