DOWAGIAC — As part of the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, the Lafontaine Quartet performed for the festival’s second annual Fischoff Soiree. The group was invited due to being a quarter finalist in the annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, one of the largest and most prestigious chamber music competitions in the world.

The Lafontaine Quartet was formed in 2018 at the McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. Professor André Roy helped form the group.

“It is actually pretty unusual for a group that has only been together for a year to make it to Fischoff,” said Teresa Roberts, a Fischoff representative. “It is really an unusual accomplishment to have won what they have already won. Many of the groups that come here have been together for several years.”

Above, members of the quartet play for residents at the Dowagiac Area History Museum Thursday night. From left to right, Aaron Chain, 22, from Hong Kong, China, plays the violin, Astrid Nakaumar, 18, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, plays the violin, Emily Rekrut-Pressey, 21, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, plays the viola and Fiona Robson, 21, from London, Ontario, Canada, plays the cello. All four members are currently completing their undergrad degrees in music performance at McGill University.

The quartet won the 2018 Schulich School of Music chamber music competition and is participating in the 46th annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
