DOWAGIAC — With just four weeks until the start of the postseason, first-year Buchanan coach Jim Brawley was hoping to have more than 13 games played.

While he is happy with the Bucks’ 9-4 overall record after their sweep of Dowagiac, to win the Bryan Frazier Memorial on Saturday, he is hoping his team will get a chance to get more games in between now and districts.

“We got a lot of swings inside, but we have not played a lot of outside baseball yet,” he said. “We have a busy schedule coming up and that is going to help. We just have to keep getting better every time.”

Brawley said that the team is still a work in progress when it comes to learning his style of coaching.

Brawley replaced Lonnie Hoover, who stepped down at baseball coach, but remain Buchanan’s athletic director following last season.

“They are starting to come around,” he said. “We have to get better at the little things. The big things like pitching, hitting and defense we do well at. It is just the small things we have to get right.

In the first game against the Chieftains, Buchanan got a strong pitching performance from Gannon Kutemeier, who tossed a two-hitter.

The Bucks had eight hits, including a pair from Austin Williams and a double by Brad VanOverberghe.

In the second game, Jack Branch and Macoy West combined on a four-hitter.

Dedrick Adkerson doubled for the Bucks.
